Polarized Proton and Deuteron Beams at COSY

Aim of this paper is to present a brief and basic introduction to polarized beams and the behaviour of a particle’s spin in an electromagnetic field. It is not intended to give a complete presentation of the spin dynamic theory. Instead the most important features are given without proof and details not absolutely necessary are left out. Spin depolarizing mechanisms are discussed and the cures ...

The Optics of Beams

The analysis of Chapter 2 was based on the vectorial form of Maxwell's equations, which we used to demonstrate the existence of plane waves. Clearly, other types of wave must exist an infinite plane wave is only an idealisation, and real waves have the form of bounded beams. Unfortunately, vector theory rapidly becomes unmanageable when applied to more complicated geometries. We therefore intro...

Longitudinally Polarized Colliding Beams

The feasibility of experiments with the polarized colliding beams expands significantly possibilities of getting information on fundamental interactions. Even the use of the transversely polarized beams enables getting the more reliable and clear definition of spins for the intermediate states and final particles,1p2 as well as to introduce the precise absolute energy scale.3-s But only the use...

Elliptically Symmetric Polarized Beams

We study the free-propagation features of an optical field endowed with a non-uniform polarization pattern with elliptical symmetry. The fields derived in this way are called Elliptically Symmetric Polarized Beams (ESPB for short). Some properties of these fields are analysed. Moreover, it is shown how it is possible to obtain such light beams by applying the results to Bessel-Gauss beams.

Natural shaping of the cylindrically polarized beams.

We have experimentally and theoretically shown that the circularly polarized beam bearing a singly charged optical vortex propagating through a uniaxial crystal can be split after focusing into the radially and azimuthally polarized beams in the vicinity of the focal area provided that the polarization handedness and the vortex topological charge have opposite signs.
